Isa 53:1-6 " Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the
arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender
plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness;
and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with
grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we
esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was
wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every
one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
"
1. We all have gone astray. Say, that is too general, to change the word all, but we all like sheep have gone astray. Starts behind the pulpit, goes clear around the room and back.
2. It does not say how you have gone astray, many possible ways.
a. Illus. disatisfied sheep. In the far distance see green pastures,
cool streams, and think if you could only be there, to lye down, etc.
b. You thought religion on Jesus Christ put you on short
commons, or you were not satisfied with the pastorage, that God through
Jesus Christ gave your soul.
c. You wandered out of God's fold, and went on, WHAT
DID YOU FIND ? What you thought you saw in the distance, HAPPINESS, PROSPERITY,
PLEASURE, CONTENTMENT. Ask yourself that question tonight, and the answer
comes back. NO, - have found MISERY,DISTRESS, SPIRITUAL POVERTY, MATERIAL
POVERTY OFTEN AND A BROKEN HEART.
d. Have you not found the world very poor pasturage for your soul
?
2. Who was it that gave you the most consolation when your loved one
was taken away by the death angel ? The worldly associate, those you attend
the theater or dance hall with, bar room, Or was it your business associates,
& etc. Or was it not the plain Christian, who came and sat up with
your loved one all night.
b. Business aspirated you, business left you limp as a rag, You got
money and pleasure possibly, but you got no place in times of bereavement,
did you ?
3. A famous English actor once stood on the stage in New York
city, while thunders of applauses came down from the galleries many thought
it was the proudest moment of the young mans life, but in front sat one
man who was sleeping and this fact spoiled the whole occasion for him ,
and he cried WAKE UP. WAKE UP.
b. Some small annoyances in your life have been more pervading
in your mind, than all the brilliant congragulations and successes. Do
not permit little things in your spiritual life to cause you to go astray,
be optomistic and you will be a blessing to yourself and all around you.
4. The text says, " The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity
of us all."
a. Some people say that it is not proper, to have one man bear the
burdens of all, quite right too. If it were possible for you
to bear your own iniquities, and redeem yourself, I would say do so.
b. If I had an obligation to meet, and had the means where-with to
meet that obligation, And then I had come to you and asked you to pay my
bill for me, what would you say ? You would say, pay your own bills.
c. If you and I were walking down the street, both in good health,
and I were to turn to you and ask you to carry me, what would you say ?
You would say walk on your own feet.
d. BUT if you and I were in this present war, fighting side by side
in the trench and I were to be shot down at your feet, helpless, What would
you do ? You would call to your comrades to help you, and you would bear
me to the ambulance and have me taken to the hospital where my wounds would
get proper care. Now would I be doing wrong by accepting this kindness
at your hands ? No- you would not be human not to do it.
e. So it is with our Spiritual condition, If we could
pay our own debt of sin, it would be well of us to do so, and get a
receipt from God Himself, but the fact is, "
WE HAVE FALLEN IN BATTLE. WE HAVE GONE DOWN UNDER THE HOT FIRE OF OUR
TRANSGRESSIONS. AND HAVE BEEN WOUNDED WITH THE SWORD OF SIN." We
lay helpless and undone, when Jesus comes along and binds up our wounds,
Pardons our transgressions and lifts us up to honor and immortality.
f. He does not lift us up by our fingertips, (Illus.
baby in water, and dud), We are a dead lift on Him. But He picks us up
and places our feet on the rock Christ Jesus.
g. ON HIM THE LORD HATH LAID THE INIQUITY OF US ALL. WONDERFUL.
5. a. There are those here tonight who are trying to bear
their own burdens and carry your own sins. Listen, that message is for
you. (Quote verse).
b. I do not know how you have gone astray, but I do know
that if you could see your present conditionbefore God almighty, You would
burst out in an agony of tears, and pelt the heavens with the cry, Lord
have mercy on me.
c. You might as well try to carry the rocky mountains
on one shoulder, and the alleganies on the other, as to try and carry the
sins of a lifetime. But Christ is able to bear the iniquities of the whole
world, and He will bear your tonight. Come, and then you will be able to
sing that song with us,
' Gone is my burden, He rolled it away, Opened my eyes
to the light of the day. Now in the fullness of joy, I can say, I'm happy,
I'm happy in Jesus. '
Casting all your cares-
